CLEAN up our city! This was the message from the DA yesterday as about 100 members from the opposition party marched to highlight filth on Nelson Mandela Bay streets.
The march started in Govan Mbeki Avenue, went along Strand and Fleming streets, and ended up in front of the Port Elizabeth City Hall.
DA caucus leader Retief Odendaal said illegal dumping in the metro was out of control.
“There are also thousands of residents from disadvantaged areas who do not receive a weekly garbage [collection] service. This affects their living conditions.
“The dumping of waste in our streets and in public open spaces has gradually become a habit in our communities,” he said.
A memorandum was accepted by the ANC chief whip of the public health committee, Thembisile Gana, who said the issues raised by the DA were adopted by the committee last week.
