After two days of protests by angry Despatch residents over RDP housing allocations, a deal was reached with the ward councillor to compile a new beneficiary list and the protests halted.

The residents met ANC Ward 41 councillor Mbongeni Bungane and human settlements officials at the Despatch town hall to try find a solution to the impasse.

The residents live in Ward 52’s Khayamnandi township in Despatch and want to move into homes to be built in Khayamnandi extension in Ward 41.

On Monday and yesterday, residents barricaded roads with rubbish and burning tyres, demanding to be allocated houses. They were livid that while the construction of 8 000 RDP houses had started and with toilets already built, they did not know who would occupy them.

Community leader Luyanda Lawu said the Ward 52 residents felt there was no transparency about the project.
