Four suspected smugglers appeared in the Jansenville Magistrate’s Court yesterday for allegedly stealing endangered cycads worth R2-million.

The arrests and the confiscation of the cycads has been described as the largest bust of its kind in the Eastern Cape.

Jan van Staden, 59, Honest Chipanga, 25, Sonondo Ndlovu, 39, and Admire Marima, 23 appeared in court yesterday and will remain in custody until next week while specialist investigators gather more evidence.

The suspects are being investigated for ties to a South African syndicate that specialises in stealing cycads.
