Uitenhage saw a mass “tightening of the knot” at the weekend when 17 couples reaffirmed their vows as part of a Valentine’s Day renewal event.
The event organised by Elim Assembly of God in Jansendal saw couples – some married for as long as 58 years – exchange vows and roses yesterday.
The couples walked down a red carpet while jazz musician Curtis Kettledas played the saxophone and hundreds of fairy lights twinkled in the background.
The church even showered them with rose petals as they left the church.
Thando, 48, and Linda Petu, 44 – who have been married for 10 years – are one of the couples who joined in.
“About a month ago, we had gone through a rough patch.
“We saw a counsellor and our relationship was stronger after that, but we still needed something that could act as a recommitment of our love. This weekend was just that,” Thando said.
Pastor Hayden Ownhouse, 43, renewed the vows he took with his wife, Deonna, 41, 15 years ago.
He said the event was exactly what they had wanted and more.
Event organiser Jill Groenewald, 31, who used the opportunity to renew her vows to her husband of five years, Grant, 35, said the event far exceeded their expectations.
“It was supposed to be a once-off event but inquiries have already come through for next year so we just might consider it,” she said.
