One of Port Elizabeth’s suspected criminal kingpins, whom police have dubbed the mastermind behind several robberies and burglaries, was arrested in a joint operation at Kudu Flats, Sidwell, late on Tuesday night.
The joint operation saw heavily armed members of the Tactical Response Team, detectives and Crime Intelligence operatives storm the flat shortly after 9pm.
Officials have called the arrest a breakthrough in efforts to clamp down on drug lords and those whose purchases of stolen items fuel the demand for burglaries and robberies.
Despite the breakthrough, provincial police commissioner General Cynthia Binta’s office remained tight-lipped, even though it had several hours to gather details.
According to several police officials, the Nigerian national is believed to run a syndicate operating mostly in Nelson Mandela Bay, allegedly involved with drug dealing, illegal liquor sales, prostitution and the purchasing of stolen property from burglaries and robberies.
