Small business protesters issue threat over way contracts policy
They came in their numbers, shut down municipal buildings in the Port Elizabeth city centre, and threatened that if they were not made millionaires, Nelson Mandela Bay would burn.
From about 5am and for most of the morning, about 250 small to medium business owners – mostly in the construction sector – blocked roads leading to the City Hall and prevented workers from entering.
The protesters demanded a meeting with the entire city leadership.
“We do not want small boys – we want the big boys,” some shouted as a few mayoral committee members and senior officials arrived.
The protesters said later that yesterday marked the first of many protests planned if they did not get their way.
