Contradictions by two accused in Clyde Byrns killing

Contradictory accounts of the night Clyde Byrns was stabbed to death in Rink Street 19 months ago were heard in the Port Elizabeth Regional Court yesterday.

Donovan Swartz, 23, and Angelina Job, 25, recounted the events of July 7 2013, but had different versions – at times even contradicting themselves under cross-examination by prosecutor Hennie van Heerden.

Their co-accused, Sithembile Jonas, 28, listened to both accounts without reacting.

The popular Byrns was stabbed in the neck after he and a girlfriend had withdrawn money from an ATM in Rink Street, Central.

Two men and a woman allegedly grabbed the girlfriend’s handbag and when Byrns tried to wrestle it from them, he was stabbed in the neck and bled to death.
