Bay firm takes over Mendi contract

getimage (24)The construction of New Brighton’s long-awaited Mendi multipurpose cultural centre has hit yet another snag.

This time it is as a result of the Johannesburg contractors not adhering to time schedules to transform the historic bottle store.

This has prompted the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality to ask the contractors – Leungo Construction/Star Time Trading JV – to cede its contract to a Nelson Mandela Bay service provider, which Leungo has agreed to.

This means further delays for the project, which has been in the pipeline for the past 16 years.

The contract will go to ProKhaya Construction, a Port Elizabeth company.

Bay sports, recreation, arts and culture executive director Noxolo Nqwazi said construction of the centre was expected to be completed in December, instead of June as originally planned.
