A week after Nelson Mandela Bay pupil Hayden Stride died of meningitis, the Health Department has finally begun dispensing antibiotics to distraught pupils and teachers at his Bloemendal school.

The intervention is welcome news for the Bloemendal community, traumatised by the death of the 10-yearold Greenville Primary School pupil from contagious meningococcal meningitis at Mercantile Hospital last Wednesday.

Teacher Lynley Bartis, who coordinates the meningitis awareness campaign at the school, said teachers, parents and pupils were hugely relieved by yesterday’s decision by the department.

“Health officials were here. We are extremely happy. Pupils and teachers have been given antibiotics to prevent the spread of meningitis. The officials will be back [today] to treat those who were absent [yesterday],” Bartis said.
