A penguin rehabilitation centre in St Francis is encouraging members of the public to share some Valentine’s Day love with their little charges through a penguin adoption programme.
The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) has implemented a two for one adoption special which allows members of the public to adopt two penguins for R500.
According to SANCCOB development and marketing coordinator Louanne Mostert the campaign runs until the end of February but the public is encouraged to adopt all year round.
Mostert said the centre was in need of as much help as possible as African penguins are endangered with not even 2% of the population living free in the wild.
Explaining the adoption package she said: “The R500 covers all the rehabilitation and release costs of the individual penguin.
“This includes its fish, medicine and a stay at SANCCOB which is anything between three weeks to three months.
“As part of the adoption process you get to name your penguins and receive a special adoption pack including a picture, certificate and a thank you letter. We still have nearly 100 penguins up for adoption,” she said.
