More than one ton of perlemoen worth almost R1-million was confiscated during a routine stop and search operation on the Garden Route at the weekend.
Police spokesman Captain Malcolm Pojie said a car chase ensued after the driver of a vehicle refused to pull over for the Langeberg K-9 dog unit patrolling the N2 between Groenvlei and Sedgefield.
“After being pursued by the police, they pulled over near Groenvlei where both the driver and his passenger jumped out the vehicle and disappeared into the dense bushes,” he said.
“The members searched the vehicle and found 1 035.9kg of abalone with an estimated value of R828 720 concealed in bags in the back of the bakkie.”
Both the perlemoen and bakkie were confiscated.
Pojie said anyone with information on the suspects could call the Knysna police station on (044) 203-6600.
