Hi-tech bid to collar motorists

Battling with old, outdated technology to capture traffic violations on the roads of the Nelson Mandela Bay metro, the municipality is looking at buying the latest hi-tech equipment, including new advanced cameras, to trap speeding motorists.

Metro authorities are attempting to step up efforts to licence disk and then allow the traffic officer to select the offence from a menu.

Last week, the company that was awarded the tender to manage the municipality’s system for processing traffic fines – Traffic Management Technologies (TMT) – gave councillors a run-down of the latest traffic technology which it hoped to implement in Nelson Mandela Bay.

This included a new iCam system, which is permanent, portable and tripod traffic cameras with the ability to pick up on vehicles that were stolen or subject to unpaid traffic fines, by screening the number plates from a distance.
