A top Eastern Cape government official accused of rape could not hold back his tears when he was denied bail in the East London Magistrate’s Court.
The man, who is accused of raping a relative, was arrested on Friday.
Magistrate Merwin Meyer said yesterday it would not be in the interests of justice to release him as he might interfere with witnesses.
The man, who took up a position in premier Phumulo Masualle’s office earlier this month, is due to make his next court appearance on March 24.
The complainant, who is in her 20s and may not be identified, is related to the man. She told investigators the abuse started 10 years ago when she was just 15.
Masualle yesterday called the man’s arrest tragic and a major setback.
