Former student leader dies in crash

Former Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University student leader Yolanda Guma was killed in a car accident this week.

Guma, 30, who was also personal assistant to ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane, was one of two people killed in a car accident between East London and King William’s Town on Tuesday.

They were on their way to Port Elizabeth as part of the ANC team working on clergyman Mcebisi Xundu’s funeral arrangements.

Paying tribute to Guma yesterday, Mabuyane called her a dedicated workaholic who always gave her best.

“She was a comrade you needed in the office of the ANC. She was my PA, but she managed the entire leadership.

“We really lost a jewel, a rare and special breed, if I may put it like that.

“She will be missed by all of us in the ANC leadership.

“She was a really humble person who had a big heart.

“She made my work as provincial secretary really simple.

“We are feeling sombre,” Mabuyane said.

Guma was an SA Students Congress member of the university’s Student Representative Council,

She served as secretary-general and treasurer-general of the SRC. ANC Youth League provincial spokesman Ayongezwa Lungisa described Guma as an exemplary leader who valued education.

“We lower our banners in her honour and hope that she will rest in peace knowing that we will carry on the spear, and the wheel of the revolution shall never stop.

“We send our deepest condolences to her family and friends.

“Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time and we thank them for allowing this jewel to be part of us,” he said.

Mabuyane said the ANC would hold a memorial service for Guma at the Fort Hare University in East London tomorrow.

Her funeral is at the University of Zululand on Sunday.
