Two of the latest victims of Port Elizabeth’s gang violence – one a 13-year-old girl – are still recovering in hospital after being wounded in shootings on Thursday night.
Three shootings in the space of two hours claimed one man’s life and wounded the girl and a 23-year-old man.
A man, 43, was shot and killed in front of his wife when the couple arrived in Bethelsdorp at their Bambey Street home at about 9pm.
Police spokesman Warrant Officer Alwin Labans said the couple had just pulled into their driveway when the victim was approached by two men.
“As the husband was helping his wife out of their car one of the men shot the husband in the back of the head before running away. The victim died at the scene.”
Labans said the possibility that the shooting could be gang-related is being investigated.
At about the same time the teenage girl was washing herself inside her Leith Street home, in Helenvale, when a shooting took place in the street outside. Labans said a stray bullet went through the window and hit the girl in the upper body. She was rushed to Livingstone hospital in a serious condition.
About two hours earlier another shooting took place in Highfield Road, Schauderville where two men, leaving a church youth group meeting, were shot at from a white Isuzu bakkie.
One of the men, 23, was wounded in his left arm.
