Popular Port Elizabethbased radio station Umhlobo Wenene FM (UWFM) will at the end of this month lose two presenters whose voices have charmed listeners for more than 30 years.
Airwave legends Thozamile “Sir Thoz” Nyakatya and Zola Kaso Majiza, fondly known by her listeners as Makazi (aunt), are retiring after a lifetime of radio presenting.
Majiza, 62, originally of King William’s Town, joined the broadcasting world in 1985, co-presenting an Afrikaans programme on Radio Bantu. Since then she has presented women’s programmes, gospel shows and an afternoon drive show.
“It was the gospel show that opened a lot of doors for me as I became the first presenter of SABC 1’s Gospel Gold between 1989 and 1990,” she said.
