While the provincial leadership of the ANCYL named its preferred candidate for the youth league presidency, some regions in the province seem to want another candidate.
Magasela Mzobe, the former ANCYL task team national coordinator, was named the preferred candidate by the Eastern Cape youth league.
However, former youth league president Ronald Lamola is garnering more support in the province as the national elective conference approaches.
Lamola was in the Eastern Cape at the weekend, together with former youth league secretary-general Sandiso Magaqa.
On Thursday, the pair attended a memorial service for a youth league leader, Solly Maqutywa, in Lusikisiki, and on Saturday Lamola attended the funeral.
On both occasions he was given time to address the crowds, with the league’s present chairman reportedly saying Lamola was available to take up leadership.
This reportedly did not sit well with some leaders who want the league to support Mzobe.
The Alfred Nzo region was the only region that came out in support of Lamola last year.
At a leadership meeting yesterday, it reaffirmed its support.
Alfred Nzo league spokesman Lixolie Petela said: “We are very sure we want Lamola as president when we go to congress. We still believe he is the best candidate to advance our economic freedom.”
Speaking at the funeral on Saturday, Lamola said it was time to revive the ANCYL.
According to Petela, the OR Tambo region’s youth league structure is also fully behind Lamola.
