Three boys drown in pool, river

Three boys drowned in Port Elizabeth yesterday – one at the St George’s Park Swimming Baths and two in the Swartkops River.

A boy, 14, drowned at the popular public swimming pool yesterday.

While details of the incident were still sketchy last night, it is believed the boy died at about 3pm after attempts to resuscitate him failed.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Alwin Labans confirmed the drowning but did not identify the boy. Police would conduct an inquest into the boy’s death.

Nelson Mandela Bay municipal spokesman Mthubanzi Mniki said it was not yet clear how the boy had drowned, although four lifeguards were on duty at the pool at the time.

In the other incident, the bodies of two Zwide boys aged nine and 11 were recovered from the river at about 5.30pm.

Motherwell police spokesman Mncedi Mbombo said the boys were part of a group of seven boys who went swimming in the river.

Hundreds of people have died from drowning this festive season! Why are there no campaigns on television and radio advising people of the dangers. In fact why has there been no campaign on television to encourage people to drive carefully? Seems like the people who run this country are only concerned about partying and celebrating 103 years of the A.N.C.
