Hundreds of bus and taxi operators from across the Eastern Cape are expected to gather in East London today to attend a pupil transport meeting.
The meeting at the Orient Theatre will be hosted by Transport MEC Weziwe Tikana.
Transport spokesman Ncedo Kumbaca said several government officials from the Education Department would attend, as well as provincial legislature portfolio committee members on education and transport.
“We will have a panel discussion, which will include parents, learners, educators and the public transport industry,” Kumbaca said.
Earlier this month, Uncedo taxi association asked the East London High Court to stop the department from awarding the tender to transport more than 57 000 pupils.
The department called for individual transport operators to bid for the transport tender without properly advertising it in public.
The association won its case on Tuesday when Judge Dawid van Zyl ordered that the tender be re-advertised in the government tender bulletin, on the website of the department of transport and in the Daily Dispatch and The Herald newspapers by no later than January 31.
