Party says NMMU SRC election result augurs well for next year

THE ANC called it a temporary setback, a sign of growth and a test of character for its student movement Sasco. The DA, however, said winning the NMMU SRC election signalled inevitable change heading to the Bay next year.

The DA Student Organisation (Daso) retained control of the university’s student leadership body yesterday in a crucial poll which saw some of South Africa’s most powerful politicians battle it out to win the hearts and minds of young, educated voters.

Political analyst Dr Mcebisi Ndletyana said Sasco’s loss exposed how the ANC was losing touch with young voters.

But NMMU political science professor Joleen Steyn-Kotze said a university election was not an adequate barometer of the voting trends of young people in the city.
