More than 40 killed in two E Cape accidents

At least 43 people were killed in two separate road accidents in the Eastern Cape on Saturday‚ Minister of Transport Dipuo Peters said.

She said that about 34 people were killed when a bus went out of control in curves on the R408 route between Butterworth and Willowvale.

About people were still reported trapped and severely injured‚ she added.

Rescue operations were on the site as soon as the crash was reported.

“More information of the crash is still been investigated and gathered by both the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and the South African Police Services (SAPS).

“Upon the initial findings and notifications of the next of kin of the deceased‚ more details on the carnage will be released to the public‚” Peters said.

In a separate accident on the R61 Wapadsbergpass between Cradock and Graaff Reinette‚ nine people were killed and five injured when a minibus taxi overturned‚ the minister added.

The accident was also being investigated by the RTMC and the SAPS‚ she said.

The minister expressed her condolences to the families of the victims.
