Marikana miners were 'armed and had killed' - Zuma

President Jacob Zuma has told parliament that police were reacting to violent strikers when they acted at Marikana‚ where 34 miners were shot dead during a strike.

Zuma said the police were deployed only after strikers had killed 10 people.

"The workers were armed to the teeth‚ they had already killed 10 people. The police were trying to stop them‚" he said.

He added that it was not "as if the police came and just mowed down people who were innocently sitting".

Zuma was commenting on criticism of the way in which he has explained the Marikana killings during parliamentary question time.  -RDM News Wire
