Police say they are nearing the point where they can make an arrest for the murder of Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.

Meyiwa's father, Sam Meyiwa, claimed on Monday that Kelly Khumalo knew the identity of the killer.

"I want to know who killed Senzo. That's all I want from Kelly," said Meyiwa.

Khumalo might not be able to supply that answer, but the police say they are getting closer.

“We are busy investigating and getting overwhelming evidence, we are closing the net but should also make sure whoever we arrest is the right suspect,” Major General Vincent Leshabane told journalists in Johannesburg, according to IOL.

“We are getting good evidence…we are left with linking a suspect to the crime.”

The police have learned to be cautious.

Shortly after Meyiwa was killed the police arrested Zamokuhle Mbatha, who ended up with his image splashed across the media.

Many still thought he was guilty despite the fact that he was found to not be involved.

He is now suing the SAPS for wrongful arrest and defamation.

"The statement was understood by members of the public, especially soccer fans, both nationally and abroad, and was intended by Lt-Gen Vinesh Moonoo to mean that I was a criminal who had murdered Senzo Meyiwa – the Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and captain.

“When Moonoo made the statement, he was acting within the course and scope of his employment with the South African Police Service. As a result of the publication of the defamatory statement, the members of the public wanted to kill me and members of my family,” Mbatha said. -TimesLive
