Festival fun and games begin

FESTINOS rose with the sun in Grahamstown yesterday to explore South Africa’s biggest variety of arts, crafts and performances at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival.

The 11-day festival opened kicked off, transforming the usually quite town into a hub of creative activity.

From as early as 9am, the streets teeming with thousands of smiling faces, bringing business to hundreds of stalls and checking out the schedule of shows.

About 600 shows are to be held in 60 venues spread across the City of Saints.

Freedom of expression, artistic creativity and satire are the big themes for this year’s festival and maestro, and Pieter- Dirk Uys set the tone last night in the first of his three performances in the coming days for the festival. -Tremaine van Aardt
