Rape accused hangs himself in court cells

An Addo man who stood accused of raping a 13-year-old girl hanged himself with his socks in the Grahamstown High Court cells just hours before judgment.
A court orderly discovered Phindile Mnyamana Sogcwayi‚ 36‚ hanging from the bars of his cell when he took the prisoner lunch in the court cells.
Police spokeswoman Capt Mali Govender said Sogcwayi had been alone in the cell and no foul play was suspected.
“An inquest docket has been opened for investigation‚” she said.
