Eight correctional services officials killed in car crash

Minister of Justice and Correctional Services‚ Michael Masutha confirmed the death of eight correctional services officials in a car accident on Tuesday.

“The department has learnt with shock and great sadness of the passing away of eight correctional services officials in a horrific motor vehicle collision on Tuesday morning‚” the minister said.

The officials were on their way to their offices at Buffelsjagrivier Correctional Centre in Swellendam‚ in the Western Cape.

They were travelling on the N2 near Swellendam when the accident took place. It was reported that a truck‚ which was travelling towards the direction of Cape Town‚ collided with a bakkie.

The impact pushed the bakkie towards oncoming traffic‚ colliding with the officials’ vehicle. All eight officials lost their lives‚ leaving only one survivor.

The names of the deceased could not be disclosed as the department had not yet informed their families.

“Our deepest condolences go to all members of the families during these trying times. We will provide the families and staff with the necessary support‚” said the minister.

He urged all road users to drive with care‚ and make sure that they are considerate to other motorists in order to avoid unnecessary loss of lives on our roads. Details of the memorial and funeral services will be announced at a later stage.
