Golf club in army base reopens after deal struck

THE military commander who closed the Shark River Golf Club in Port Elizabeth’s Forest Hill because he believed the sport to be dangerous has reopened the course after reaching a compromise with the club’s committee.

Yesterday, golfers were back in action at the 67-year-old club, situated inside the army base, which was closed about a month ago by acting commanding officer Lieutenant-Colonel Vusumzi Ngcobo.

Soon after its closure, SA National Defence Force national spokesman Brigadier-General Xolani Mabanga said Ngcobo had been ordered to meet club representatives to settle the dispute.

The club’s closure attracted national and international media interest.
