World sails ahoy in Bay

International competitors on way

SOME of the world’s top sailors will be docking in Port Elizabeth Harbour this week for the 60th 5O5 SAP World Championships, the preliminaries for which started yesterday.

The programme in Algoa Bay runs until April 3.

The event is being hosted at the Algoa Bay Yacht Club (ABYC).

Club commodore Alan Straton said hosting the event added to Port Elizabeth staking a claim as the watersport capital of South Africa.

“We welcome sailors to our friendly club and city knowing that Port Elizabeth will deliver some of its famous shifting winds, ensuring the world championships will be fun, hard and fair in all respects.”

The regatta consists of a South African championships incorporating pre-world competition events which are taking place now and the world championships, starting on Friday.
