Back to school to help pupils

Initiative to equip parents to assist children

MAVIS Mboya, 54, is beyond excited at the idea of going through a development learning programme – that will equip her to better help children in her care academically – and ultimately donning an academic gown when she “graduates”.

As a product of Bantu education, Mboya said she found it difficult to help her and her siblings’ children with their schoolwork because things were not the same anymore.

But that is about to change with a learning programme aimed at equipping parents and the community to help children through their school careers, launched at Sapphire Road Primary School yesterday.

Mboya is one of 20 people, including school deputy principal Alicia Baatjes and programme coordinator Martin Green, forming the first group of “students” at the school’s “university of life” who are revved up for their first classes in June.
