Four Eskom execs suspended as utility launches inquiry

Eskom has decided to suspend four executives, including its chief executive Tshediso Matona, in order to commission an independent inquiry into the current state of the business, according to a media briefing.

“To ensure that this process is as transparent and uninhibited as possible,” said Eskom Chairman, Mr Zola Tsotsi in a , “the Board has also resolved that four of its senior executives, including the Chief Executive, should step down for the duration of this enquiry”.

According to the utility's media statement, the investigation will be over the poor performance of its power plants, the delays in bringing new ones online, the high costs of primary energy and the utility's cash flow problems "among other things".

The executives who have been asked to step down for the duration of the inquiry are:

  • Ms Tsholofelo Molefe (Finance Director)
  • Mr Dan Marokane (Group Capital)
  • Mr Matshela Koko (Commercial and Technology)
"Zethembe Khoza, has been asked to assume the position of interim Chief Executive," the utility's media statement says.

"Mr Khoza will be supported by Ms Nonkululeko Veleti (Finance), Mr Abram Masango (Group Capital) and Mr Edwin Mabelane (Commercial and Technology)," the utility said.

According to the media statement the people who will be involved in the inquiry will be chosen within the next week.
