Tourist rescued at Cape St Francis

A German tourist was rescued by her husband and other tourists after being swept out to sea while swimming at Cape St Francis yesterday afternoon (27/02/15).

The woman,  Marthina Wondra, 47, was swept out to sea when she was caught in a rip-current at about 2pm.

"Apparently, assisted by her husband and others in a tour group, the victim managed to get back to the beach but was exhausted and suffering breathing difficulties with near drowning symptoms," NSRI St Francis Bay Coxswain, Marc May said.

May and Private Care Ambulance Service from Humansdorp responded to the scene after receiving the alert from the tour group operator.

May said that on arrival at the beach, an exhausted Wondra was found lying on the water's edge struggling to breath.

Wondra was transported to hospital by ambulance in a stable condition where she was monitored for secondary drowning symptoms.
