Fourteen pupils from some of Nelson Mandela Bay’s top schools did the region proud when they brought home awards from an international maths competition.

Pupils from Collegiate Girls’, Alexander Road and Pearson high schools battled it out with 21 other teams from countries that included Russia, Thailand, Taiwan and Iran at the Young Mathematicians Conference in Lucknow, India.

The conference was held in December. Former Alex pupil and Herald GM Matric of the Year 2014 finalist Benedikt Meylahn walked away with a silver medal in the senior individual category and Pearson pupil Lize Stewart won a bronze in the junior individual category.

The Collegiate senior team brought home a bronze medal from the senior team category, while the combined Alex and Pearson team won silver and the junior team a bronze.

It was the fourth year that Dr Linda Emery has taken a group of pupils to the competition, in which 60 national teams competed in team contests, relays, quizzes and a maths fair.

Alex spokeswoman Candice Capon said: “Apart from the mathematical learning and growth that these pupils experienced, there was a great sharing of different cultures among participants from the various countries as well as with the Indian hosts who showed an amazing hospitality and spirit of gratitude.”
