Municipal staff protest over restructuring plans

Angry Nelson Mandela Bay municipal housing staff downed tools yesterday, protesting against the restructuring of some posts in the human settlements department.

About 50 staff members protested at the Port Elizabeth City Hall and at the Lillian Diedericks building, calling for housing boss Lindile Petuna to step down if he failed to intervene in the impasse.

The fall-out was as a result of a memorandum dated January 30, informing workers of the planned restructuring.

In a heated meeting with Petuna, workers raised their concerns about his “unilateral decision making”, which was “putting jobs in jeopardy”.

SA Municipal Workers’ Union shop steward Mzwandile Toyis said Petuna’s decision was not communicated to the workers for consultation.
