Death of activist clergyman

Tributes pour in for Mcebisi Xundu and his struggle contribution.

To many he was an anti-apartheid struggle activist and religious leader, but to his family, Reverend Mcebisi Xundu was simply the perfect husband and father, his widow Thandiwe said yesterday.

Xundu, 80, a canon of the Anglican Diocese of Port Elizabeth, died at about 9.50am yesterday.

He was in Mercantile Hospital, having battled with pneumonia since November.

Tributes from politicians and the religious community poured in by early afternoon yesterday as many remembered the onetime SA Council of Churches president as a loyal ANC member and religious leader who had contributed immensely to the fight against apartheid.
