Policeman dies after shootout in Bay

A PORT Elizabeth policeman was killed following a shootout with two men who appeared from bushes after the officer and a colleague had pulled over a vehicle in Kwazakhele.

The death of Constable Simthembile Thandani, 30, came just hours after another Eastern Cape policeman was killed in an alleged domestic incident in Jamestown.

"The officers stopped the Corolla near Boxer Superstore in Njoli Street," Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu said.

"They were talking to the driver when two men approached them from a path in bushes nearby.

"One had a firearm and started shooting at the policemen."

Thandani was hit in the upper body and died at the scene. He did manage to return seven shots, wounding one of the men.
