A BATHER was airlifted to hospital by Aeromed 3, one of the Eastern Cape Health Department’s emergency helicopters, after he started vomiting blood on the beach at Van Stadens Holiday Resort.
Paramedic Brenhan Metune said the man, 44, had emerged from the sea on his own at about 2pm on Sunday, but bystanders said he appeared to be in discomfort.
“He sat down afterwards and started vomiting and coughing up blood,” Metune said.
The man was stabilised and airlifted to Uitenhage Provincial Hospital.
Metune said the inhalation of water could cause the bronchi, the two main tubes from the trachea that go into the lungs, to go into spasm, making it very difficult to breathe. – Estelle Ellis
