George police seize fake goods

COUNTERFEIT goods worth more than R1-million were seized by police in George during a raid on several shops at a taxi rank this week.

“Two of the shops had been identified as main storage places for the counterfeit goods,” Southern Cape police spokesman Captain Malcolm Pojie said.

Police seized goods with an estimated value of more than R700000, including clothing such as T-shirts, tracksuits, jeans, caps, shoes and other accessories like sunglasses, belts, watches and pens.

They also confiscated hundreds of counterfeit CDs and DVDs worth more than R300000.

“We arrested three people for the possession of counterfeit goods. The items were handed over to the relevant authorities to dispose of,” Pojie said.

“One illegal immigrant was also arrested and will now be dealt with by the Home Affairs Department.”

South Africa is known as one of the world’s top dumping grounds of counterfeit goods.
