JUST hours before he died, jazz guitarist Fikile “Bra Fiks” Marwana told his band members not to cancel their shows if he were to die.
On Wednesday the Mo Jazz guitarist, 60, who had been battling with high blood pressure for months, died at Dora Nginza Hospital.
Marwana’s wife, Nosamkelo, 51, said Bra Fiks could not walk on his own on Wednesday. “We took him to his doctor in Motherwell, who stabilised his blood pressure. But he got worse.
“Then his manager, Lennodia Petersen, rushed him to Dora Nginza.
When she came back after 8pm with the band members, I knew I had lost my husband. I could see the pain and sadness all over their faces,” Nosamkelo said.
She said she would forever cherish the memories they had made since meeting in 1987.
Petersen said: “We cancelled some of our gigs. [It was funny] – on Tuesday we told him we had cancelled some gigs, but he begged us not to.”
Before Bra Fiks drew his last breath on Wednesday evening, she said, he asked band member Khayakethu Nazo to care for his youngest son, Abongile, 13.
Fiks is survived by his wife and children Nomvula, 25, Nobathembu, 23, Zandile, 21, Abongile, 13, and five grandchildren.
The family has not yet decided on the burial date. – Yoliswa Sobuwa
