Children get big beach fun chance

WHILE Zports's Michael Zoetmulder is hard at work establishing Nelson Mandela Bay's supremacy in water sports, he is equally passionate about helping children revel in beach activities.

Yesterday, nearly 50 youngsters from various parts of Port Elizabeth took part in one of the biggest family events in Africa at Hobie Beach.

Zports's Aquelle Ocean Racing series saw young athletes from Joe Slovo, KwaDwesi and the Khayalethu Youth Centre dressed up in running and swim gear to take part in the action.

While most of the youngsters only took part for fun – soaking up the sun, sea and sand – some managed to race off with gold and silver medals in their respective categories.

"It's good for our boys to be among people other than their friends and facilitators at the centre," Khayalethu senior child and youth care worker Mfundo Catele said.

"Being able to take part for free is a bonus in comparison to the fun that the boys have when taking part in Michael's events. - Alvené du Plessis
