Nelson Mandela Bay by-election results provided by the IEC to The Herald yesterday were incorrect.

Via email on Thursday, IEC regional assistant manager Crosby Bacela sent results which stated that in Ward 42 independent candidate Andile Gqabi won 60,7% of the vote while the ANC got 36,24%.

The email stated that the results were for all voting districts in the ward.

These results were incorrect as they were only a reflection of one voting district in the ward. In fact Gqabi won by 51,5% while the ANC got 40,5%.

Yesterday Bacela said: "The results I sent to you are the same as those I sent to the city manager (Mpilo Mbambisa) to announce the outcome of the by-election. I might have ommitted to say in my email that they were provisional results. It seems that they were provisional results as you will see that I downloaded them from our system as soon as they were all captured. If something was then edited or checked after that I will have to speak to our IT department about that. Those were provisional results. I just omitted to say so in my email."

Bacela downloaded the results at 1:11am and sent them to The Herald at 11:16am.

Bacela's email also stated that in ward 46, the ANC got 81,04% of the vote while the DA received 7,7%.

This was also a reflection of only one voting district. In fact in ward 46 the ANC received 65,86% of the vote while the DA received 27,6%.

The Herald is lodging a complaint to the IEC for providing the paper with inaccurate results. - Herald Reporter
