Meyiwa murder: progress reported

THE pieces of the puzzle that is the Senzo Meyiwa murder are falling into place "nicely".

Head of detectives Lieutenant-General Vinseh Moonoo said yesterday the investigation into the murder of the Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain, "which appears to be a robbery gone horribly wrong", was sensitive.

One person – Zenokuhle Mbatha, believed to be the dreadlocked suspect illustrated in the identikits released last week – has been arrested so far.

Police believe two people were involved.

Meyiwa was shot dead at the Vosloorus home of the mother of his girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo, last Sunday.

Moonoo said he would not comment on Mbatha's exact role in the attack but he was believed to be the shooter.

Mbatha appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate's Court on Friday.

He is being kept at a police safe house until his court appearance on Tuesday next week because of fears for his safety should he be held in prison or a police cell.

Mbatha's arrest followed the release of 13 people taken in for questioning around the country days after the killing.

Moonoo said they were now focusing on a court-driven investigation. "We are following up on a number of leads to get the case trial ready."

He said they were putting the pieces of the puzzle together, "and it is coming into place nicely".

Moonoo said police were confident that two people were involved in the murder. - Graeme Hosken
