Madiba’s marriage confusion

THERE seems to be more confusion regarding Nelson Mandela’s marriage to his widow Graca Machel. A deed of grant for the Qunu property, submitted in a court bid by his ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, states Mandela was married out of community of property to Machel.

However, his will states he was married in community in property. The information was further attested to by the Deeds Office in their reply to Madikizela-Mandela’s attorneys Mvuzo Notyesi Inc.

The letter reads: “According to the registration records of this office, Farm 54 KwaMadiba, [KSD] province of the Eastern Cape, in extent 968 959 hectares [the property] is indeed registered in the name of Rolihlahla Nelson Mandela [ID number] married out of community of property and is held by a Deed of Grant G 7307-1999.”
