Protesters barricade major road

ANGRY Ward 41 residents barricaded the road between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage with burning rubbish and tyres and hurled stones at motorists during a disruptive service delivery protest yesterday.

One man was shot in the leg and arrested for allegedly firing at least five shots at the police.

More than 1 000 residents divided themselves into two groups, with one group protesting in Joe Slovo and the other at the entrance to Despatch.

The residents said they wanted to put pressure on the municipality to respond to their grievances.

ANC Raymond Mhlaba branch secretary Ncedile Soxujwa said: “We have decided to unite as Ward 41 and engage in a mass-action protest because our grievances have fallen on deaf ears at the municipality.
