Shot goes off at law courts

MYSTERY surrounds the firing of a weapon after a bullet narrowly missed a woman Correctional Services officer at the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The incident happened after a colleague accidentally discharged his firearm at the back of the New Law Courts building shortly after 8am when prisoners arrived from St Albans Prison for their court appearances.

A court official, who did not want to be named, said a group of Correctional Services officials from St Albans were chatting when one of them asked a colleague where his firearm was.

“The man reached behind in his pants and produced his firearm. As he held it in his hand, a shot suddenly went off. Everyone ducked for cover.”

Although the circumstances and details of the incident were not yet clear, another court official who was present said the warder was negligent and needed to be charged.

“The bullet narrowly missed a female colleague who was standing nearby.”
