Destructive Elands River blaze still burning

A FIRE triggered by lightning a week ago has destroyed more than 70000ha of veld and fynbos in the Elands River valley area.

Dry weather, coupled with strong winds in mountainous terrain, fuelled the spread of the fire which was still raging yesterday.

Elands River Valley chairman Tinus Vermaak said a lot of people had been roped in to contain the blaze.

"There is no immediate threat to human life or livestock. We are on standby in case things suddenly get out of control," he said. "We are trying to remain positive and combat the fire."
