Mobility fund-raiser nets 100 wheelchairs

MORE than 100 wheelchairs were handed to needy recipients as the annual Wheelchair Wednesday campaign ended at Port Elizabeth's Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium yesterday.

Hosted by the Association for Persons with Physical Disabilities (APD), the campaign aimed to raise awareness regarding issues relating to accessibility for people with disabilities.

The project involved 100 able- bodied business people being wheelchair-bound for four hours at a time so they could realise the challenges faced by disabled people every day. They had to pay money for time spent in wheelchairs, which went towards sponsoring the 100 wheelchairs. The campaign ran for five consecutive Wednesdays last month.

Wheelchair recipient Nomathamsanqa Shadrack, 59, was happy that she finally had her own wheelchair.

Priscilla Stephens, who also received a wheelchair, thanked ADP for the generous gifts.
