RDP houses headache

IN a bid to curb the ever- growing problem of illegal occupants in RDP houses, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality wants to employ the services of a law firm to start the process of evicting unlawful occupants and giving the houses to the rightful beneficiaries.

Because the provision of houses is a provincial function, the city has turned to the Eastern Cape Human Settlements Department to conduct an assessment to ascertain the extent of the problem.

It has yet to receive feedback from Bhisho.

At a municipal public accounts committee (Mpac) meeting yesterday, the director of social development, education and administration, Simiselo Nongampula, highlighted the municipality's plight, saying the "extent of the problem is so huge". - Rochelle de Kock
