Richmond Hill residents reclaim pavements

RICHMOND Hill residents in Port Elizabeth are taking matters into their own hands, finding cheap ways to enforce laws in the popular Stanley Street hub in an attempt to prevent illegal parking, motorists speeding through stop streets and to clean up litter.

Fed up with drivers climbing the pavement on the corner of Stanley and Mackay streets, huge rocks have been put up to discourage illegal parking.

Richmond Hill resident Johan Meyer, affectionately known as the mayor of Mackay Street, said the rocks were just one of the measures being taken by the residents with the help of the municipality.

"Because there is not a big budget for other prevention methods, we felt the rocks, which are from the quarry, were best," he said. - Thulani Gqirana
