'Stateless' child gets SA identity

A SIX-YEAR battle has finally ended for a Cuban family whose South African-born daughter was deemed "stateless".

The little girl's emotional mother said yesterday she was able sleep at night again after last week's Pretoria High Court decision recognising her daughter as a South African citizen.

The court found that the Department of Home Affairs had acted unlawfully by not registering the child as such.

The Cape Town family, with the help of non-profit organisation Lawyers for Human Rights, headed to court after both South Africa and Cuba refused to acknowledge the girl as their own. - Nomahlubi Jordaan
