Mom, babes safe after night in wilds

A TOURIST and her two small children, a 10-month-old baby and a toddler, spent an icy winter's night huddled under a tree and rock after she got lost while hiking along a Port St John's trail at the weekend.

As temperatures plummeted below 6°C on Saturday night, Nicole de Wit, 34, was forced to sleep in dense mountainous forest with her baby daughter, Piper, and three-year-old son, Samuel.

De Wit was hiking along Port St Johns' Sullivan trail when she became separated from her husband, Joshua, 33, after signboards marking the direction of the trail disappeared.

De Wit said the weather was perfect when the family decided to hike up the mountain near the Umzimvubu River on Saturday morning. But their decision became a nightmare when the signs suddenly disappeared as they were heading into an area with dense forest and dangerous boulders. - Loyiso Mpalantshane and Bongani Fuzile
